François-Séverin Desgraviers-Marceau,
(° 1st March 1769 in Chartres - † 21 September 1796 in Altenkirchen).
French General. Son of a bailiwick from Chartres.
In 1785, aged 16, he joined the Angoulême regiment. In 1792, he was promoted to lieutenant-colonel of the 1st battalion of the Eure and Loire volunteer service. In 1793, he was posted to the Vendée region and at 24 years old, on Kléber’s recommendation, was named General in Chief of the western army. He won the bloody battle of Le Mans (21 December 1793) against the Vendians. Transferred to the Ardennes in 1794, then to the Sambre and Meuse army, as a divisional general, he helped to win the Battle of Fleurus. In 1796 he covered the retreat of Jourdan’s army ; he pushed the enemy back many times, until he was mortally wounded during the battle of Altenkirchen on the 19th September 1796. He was only 27 years old.
His ashes lie in the Panthéon in Paris, at Les Invalides and under the statue at Place des Épars, in Chartres. In addition, he was the uncle of the frigate captain and missionary Auguste Marceau.

In 1667, the Tuileries palace was livened up with a vast rural park which stretched to the hill at Chaillot. Le Nôtre was given the task and constructed a vast group of avenues. These were lined with trees, amongst which Parisians were able to go for a walk. In 1694, this newly created large avenue was named the Champs Elysées, in reference to Greek mythology.
Started by Colbert, supervision of the work then returned to the Marquis de Marigny. He planted trees on all the walk-ways. From the end of the XVIIIth century until the first half of the XIXth century, the Champs Elysées kept the same look.
La Place de l'Etoile, is still only a central reservation.
